New Unit Comes to Nellis
On October 1, 2001 the 555th RED HORSE Squadron was re-activated as a 120-person squadron and will be based at Nellis. We are excited about continuing the legacy of the 555 RED HORSE that came to be during the Viet Nam War. We have resurrected the Triple Nickel Patch and are proud of its history and what it represents. The unit is part of the Total Force round out of the 554 RHS in Korea. The total 554 RHS would include the 555 RHS (AFRES) located here and the 254 RHF (ANG) located in Tacoma. The 555 RHS is heavily loaded in equipment operators with 55 positions. We are fortunate to be closely located to the 820 RHS and should enhance training of both units.
The 555 RHS is literally beginning from scratch. At the present time there are three full time personnel on board, LTC Frank Myers, CMSgt Wade Wayment, and TSgt Ernest Powers. We became active in the middle of August and our first task was to renovate our building, set up the initial task force to help bed us down and spend $1.8 million of Congressional money before the first of October. So far we have been successful in all tasks. Our first building is currently being renovated by the Nellis SABER contractor and should be complete before our official standup ceremony in February. The Site Activation Task Force (SATAF) is complete and provided many recommendations and milestones for our standup.
Now we are starting our biggest challenge; recruiting! We will have 8 fulltime personnel consisting of 7 Active Guard/Reserve (AGR) and one Air Technician (ART). The fulltime AGR positions left to fill are the Training Technical Sergeant positions and the Personnel/Information Management ART. These positions are advertised on the AFRC Web Page at http://www.afrc.af.mil/jobs/UAGR/unit_jobs.htm. The remaining 112 traditional reserve positions will come from the local area, prior service, separations, and transfers from other units. Although mainly comprised of Civil Engineering types of AFSC's, there are also positions for Services, IDMT's, Supply, Information Management, Logistics Plans, Finance, CATM, Finance and Vehicle Maintenance. Not only will we continue the RED HORSE tradition of working hard and playing hard, we are planning most of our deployments to the Pacific Theater in support of our PACAF mission. The Pacific Air Command is a vast area and can provide a multitude of training opportunities.
Please feel free to email myself, franklin.myers@nellis.af.mil or CMS Wayment at wade.wayment@nellis.af.mil.
